Summary
The MEDIASRES Scientific kick-off meeting took place in Leiden (NL) from September 19th to 21st, 2012. It was attended by all appointed fellows, representatives of all but one partners and local and invited speakers summing up to a total of 35 participants.
After a short self-introduction by everybody, the meeting started with three plenary lectures on statistical challenges. traps and statistical implications in good clinical practice. These lectures were open to the (local) public. The day was completed by an interesting tour through the beautiful city of Leiden, an excellent dinner and a very nice boat trip back to the Hotel(s).
The second day started with a short briefing for the ESRs on their rights and duties as MEDIASRES fellows. After that all Individual Research projects within MEDIASRES were briefly summarized by the corresponding supervisors to provide an overview on the research conducted under MEDIASRES. In addition, Werner Vach gave a short introduction to the online course on regression modeling, which will start shortly after the kick-off meeting. The afternoon session was divided into two sections: while the MEDIASRES fellows received their first training sessions (Scientific Integrity and a course in R), the supervisors met for the second Supervisory Board meeting.
The remaining time of the meeting was reserved for ESRs only. The training continued with talks and practicals on patient privacy and good datamanagement, reproducible research, systematic literature search and the R-course (continued). To foster fruitful discussions the ESRs were sent out together and without supervisors on the second evening.
Some feedback from Fellows
- "The meeting was organized and conducted in a very professional and pleasant manner. A broad variety of topics was presented. Very interesting meeting"
- "The Kick-off meeting in Leiden provided a very nice opportunity to get to know the other researchers (both supervisors and fellows) and their projects in the MEDIASRES network. Meeting everyone in person not only allowed for the possibility to orientate with respect to co-supervisors, locations for secondments and more generally on how to start a PhD project, but also enabled the expansion of my scientific network. Furthermore, the lectures provided at the meeting added to my understanding of good research conduct, issues in statistics and programming skills."
- "Generally, the meeting was an excellent opportunity to know each other; and be more familiar with the network, our duties, the tasks of other fellows, the circumstances of the connection among the projects and some other important things. Not to mention that the very friendly atmosphere encouraged me to do my best on my project, as soon as I start."
- "It was a good and well organized meeting, everyone was actively participated and the atmosphere was very good. I enjoyed this meeting a lot, although the meeting schedule was a bit tight."
